It’s the first day of spring – astronomically. I prefer the meteorological calendar, where spring begins March 1.

It’s also the last day of my five-week sabbatical + 2 day vacation – a.k.a. Retirement, Part 1. It’s also the last day of sunny weather here in Portland for a while.

At 11:30 am I met with three members of the Trans Group at work, and we had a fun lunch. The Trans Group hasn’t been meeting recently, and I wanted to have one final meetup with them before I leave the company. There are 31 members in the group, but only three were bold enough to meet with me. Actually, there is a core group of the founding members (the group was formed in 2019) – and there are about 8 of us remaining. The three lunch attendees were from this group, and we know each other well.

After lunch I drove into Portland. The cherry trees at the waterfront are in bloom, and I wanted to get some pictures – especially as this was the last sunny day. I decided to experiment and use a completely different camera/lens setup than what I’ve used the last couple of years. In 2022 and 2023 I used my Nikon Z6 plus an adapter to mount my old Minolta Rokkor-X 135mm f/2.8 manual focus lens. This year I thought I’d try some wide angle shots. I brought my Nikon D810 with the NIKKOR AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G lens. I also packed a second lens – my Sigma 20mm f/1.4 lens.

Even though it was 2 pm on a Tuesday, the park was filled with people, as it usually is when the cherry blossoms are in force. I tried a variety of shots, and they’re... OK. I think I prefer the telephoto lens to the wide angle lenses.

I shot for about an hour, which is the norm for me. I only need one cherry blossom photo for my annual photo calendar. I brought home 200+.

Tomorrow I have to return to work. Ugh. But I have only two three-day work weeks – and then I’m done. And I have to be in the office only for four of those days. However, I’m already spoiled to having every day for myself, and I’m eager to get past these six workdays. The end of the month will come quickly.

Remembering Fup

Willamette Week’s Pet Issue had an article on Bookstore Cats, which mentioned legendary bookstore cat, Fup. That made me want to dig up some of my old journal memories – and here are a few:

Later Fup posts have a lot of broken links to the old Powell’s Newsletter/Blog, and things got sadder when Fup passed away. But I’m proud to say that I was one of Fup’s many acquaintences and admirers.

Today I rebooted Hinata, and wi-fi came up fine. The OS complained that iCloud sync wasn’t finished and for me to check passwords. Everything looked OK, and I restarted iCloud sync – and it finished without issue. I had to log back in to Google and Dreamwidth – and then everything was back to normal. That’s nice – although I haven’t yet figured out what I’ll do with my old laptop. I guess I’ll shut it down for now and set the 2018 13" MacBook Pro aside – maybe pack it up for donation – or recycling. It still works pretty well (except for the failing Touch Bar – which is rather important for function keys).

Just for kicks I dug out this photo of Nano-chan, my 2011 MacBook Air:

It’s surprising how much that old laptop looks like Fern. I suppose this is why Fern feels nostalgic whenever I’m using the new laptop.

Not according to plan – but I know when to throw plans out the window...

Friday morning I had a Zoom chat with one of my co-worker friends. During the call I explained my plans for a new MacBook Air, and he brought up the subject of corporate discounts. Six years ago corporate discounts did not apply to the Macintoshes I purchased (and I bought two in that year). But last year he had gotten a corporate discount on a Mac mini. Hmm. We looked online but did not find anything that specified discounts for any Mac laptop.

Tsundoku ja nai #3

New Manga
New Manga

Some books come into the household and never even get close to going onto the tsundoku stack.

Yesterday I went to Kinokuniya Beaverton and picked up two new releases (yay, gift cards!) – and between last night and this morning, I read both.

Recently Completed
Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, Vol 12 (Series Finale). There’s never been a question what was going to happen between Junta and Nagisa. Mainly we needed to see it actually happen – and how it would happen. The setup was the class trip to Kyoto, and I felt echoes of the high school trip to Kyoto in Bloom Into You – with the Sayaka’s anxiety plus the difficulty of getting Touko alone for the “right” moment. To my surprise, Junta completely failed, despite opportunities. Everything came down to a meeting after school after the trip was over. (There’s also a Bloom Into You parallel here.) Junta is still way too awkward, and Nagisa was unnecessarily impish in her response – but eventually a mutual confession was complete. Finally! As we say in the forums, “I’m not crying; you’re crying.” A super nice touch was a time-skip epilogue. I love these! (Again, echoes of Bloom Into You.) This was a good series with a happy ending. The series is similar to but sweeter than Teasing Master Takagi-san, fluffier than Bloom Into You. Junta was an OK character, but I love Nagisa. This series is much like Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie with a pretty female romantic lead, bland/awkward male lead, a trio of close friends, and support from various family members.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Deluxe Edition, Vol. 4. This collection encompasses Volumes 9–11 of the original tankoubon. There’s really no commentary for the slowest, most gentle slice-of-life manga about the end of the world. Overall, Alpha continues to do fine, and her friends are gearing up for new adventures. Slowly, Alpha is rebuilding the cafe from assorted scraps. It’s stil fun to watch all the characters lost in their unspoken and occasionally spoken thoughts. Best apocalypse ever.

Love in Tsundoku

lovelyangel: Nagisa Kubo from Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible, Vol. 10 (Kubo Usagi)
I’ve started working down my tsundoku pile, and as a romantic, I’m pleased with the stories in this first batch. Here is what I read, in order (and, yeah, kinda spoilery)...

Recently Completed
Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 40. In recent volumes the Kingdom of Kouka, the Dragon Warriors, Hak, Yun, Meinyan have all taken a beating and are losing on multiple fronts. With capital city Kuuto on fire, the Dragon Warriors down, and Meinyan kidnapped, things look good for the South Kai empire. The arrival of Val and Yun at the Kouka army camp brings news – and also spurs Yona into leading a stealth attack on the South Kai army. The big surprise is the arrival of reinforcements from an unexpected place. Yona makes friends everywhere she goes! There is also surprise news about the Dragon Warriors’ illness. Enough pieces are coming together for Yona’s bold move – and I’m finally feeling good about the situation. I love seeing the underdogs rising up.

Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible, Vol 11 In the penultimate volume of the series, Junta and Nagisa are both struggling with their feelings for each other, and there’s plenty of awkwardness and misunderstanding. There’s a class trip coming up, with times set aside for individual activities – and, thankfully, Junta and Nagisa have agreed to do things together in those times. The good news is that Junta and Nagisa know that they really like the other person, and they’re working hard to become closer. I’m expecting good things to happen in the final volume, scheduled to be published... *checks*... um, tomorrow! Guess whose Kinokuniya gift cards will be getting some exercise this week!

Only Hard Problems. This novella is all about Zane Zimmer and told from his viewpoint in every chapter except for one, which was told from Vesper’s viewpoint. The story takes place right after the events in Only Good Enemies (Book 2 in the Galactic Bonds series). Zane has been an obnoxious villain in the first two books, and in this book he shows who he truly is underneath the fake persona he generates. As usual, people are complicated. The thing is, Zane isn’t stupid – and the psion can be perceptive. Most of the fun in this story is watching Zane and Asterin Armas spar with each other. I like Asterin a lot, but she has Only Bad Options and is trapped with Zane in the matchmaking of the Zimmer and Collier families. As the novella progresses, it does appear that Zane and Asterin could be the recipients of the enemies-into-lovers trope so effectively applied to Kyrion and Vesper in the first two volumes. I’m all for this. More romance is good. The plot here (a Techwave attack) is just a sidetrip; the more important outcome is a changing relationship between Zane and Asterin.

Whisper Me a Love Song, Vol 7. The volume opens with additional bonding between Yori and Himari – which is welcomed by this romantic. The remainder of the volume returns focus on the two bands, in advance of the school culture festival performance. Yori’s focus is on writing a new song. The band Lorelei shares their backstory with manager Himari. There are old wounds, and we’re finally getting down to the underlying issues around Shiho (not that we didn’t already know). There is a lot of unrequited love in this series.

2024 MacBook Air

lovelyangel: (Eve Angel)
It’s funny that for all the news I read, the source that broke the new Apple M3 MacBook Air models to me was B&H Photo Video. I guess it’s because I don’t get my news through email – but I’m on all sorts of vendor mailing lists. Once alerted, I visited MacRumors and Apple.com to get details.

Because MacRumors took note of new trade-in values, I thought I’d see if my 2018 MacBook Pro had any trade-in value with Apple. If it were 100% operational, the laptop is worth $300 for trade-in or Apple gift card. However, I can’t honestly say all parts are working, as the Touch Bar has a segment that isn’t lit. Messages (the label for the Touch ID key) and button icons (Volume Up, Siri) don’t display. That one difference changed the $300 value to “Ready for Recycling.” Well, what do you expect for a 6-year-old computer?

This MacBook Pro is right at the cutoff for macOS 14 Sonoma; it’s the oldest MacBook Pro still supported. It’s not clear if this model will be supported by macOS 15 this fall. Next year, the 2018 MacBook Pro goes onto Apple’s Vintage List. That, plus the broken (and likely to get worse) Touch Bar, makes this laptop a prime candidate for my next Macintosh replacement.

Before I got my current MacBook Pro, I had a MacBook Air, which I liked very much. I bought the Pro because I thought I could use the extra power in the field while processing photos (e.g., OCF). But that didn’t go as I had thought. Reverting to a lighter laptop (which is still more powerful than my Intel-based MacBook Pro) looks like the best option. The other consideration at the time was that the MacBook Pro had the brighter Liquid Retina display (500 nits). However the MacBook Air has now caught up to that. Photographers can be pretty fussy about their displays.

I like to give new models a few months in the hands of customers and read their feedback before I jump in and buy a new model. I guess by the time the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference rolls around, I should be good to go. Or I could go early on a whim.
